Cookie policy

The small files our website uses, what they do, and how to switch them off.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that a website stores on your device when you visit. They’re widely used to make sites work, or work more efficiently, and to provide information to the site owner. Some websites also use similar technologies, such as your browser’s local storage, to remember small preferences.

How we use them

We keep things to a minimum. Our website uses only a small number of cookies and similar technologies, set out below. We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies, and we don’t sell your data.

Essential preferences

We use your browser’s local storage to remember small choices you make — for example, once you’ve dismissed the announcement bar at the top of the site, we store a value (under the key ss-alert-dismissed-v1) so it stays closed. This stays on your own device, isn’t shared with anyone, and isn’t used to track you.

Analytics

With your agreement, we use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use our website — which pages are popular and how people move around the site — so we can make it better. When enabled, this sets cookies such as _ga to recognise returning visitors. We use it with IP anonymisation and we don’t use it to identify you personally. If you don’t consent, these cookies are not set.

No advertising cookies

We don’t use cookies for advertising, retargeting or cross-site tracking.

Managing cookies

Analytics cookies stay switched off until you accept them in the banner shown on your first visit. You can change your choice at any time — .

You’re in control. Most browsers let you see what cookies are stored and delete them, block cookies from some or all websites, or warn you before one is set. You can usually find these options in your browser’s settings or preferences, under “Privacy” or “Cookies”. Please note that blocking essential preferences may mean parts of the site don’t remember your choices.

To clear the local-storage preference described above, you can clear your browsing data for this site in your browser settings.

More information

For more about how we handle your personal information, please see our privacy policy. If we change the cookies we use, we’ll update this page and the “last updated” date above.
